Reprise: Build a Wall (2005)

In the spirit of Liz’s obsession with books about “things that changed the world” (best case example being Cod: The Fish that Changed the World (https://www.amazon.com/Cod-Biography-Fish-Changed-World/dp/0140275010) , but it’s a loosely defined genre extending to such things as salt, seeds, coffee, chickens, equations, diseases, machines, etc.) we reckon a book about “walls that changed the world” might be not such a bad idea right now. Gilgamesh. Hadrian. China. Israel. Berlin. And now US-Mexico. It all but writes itself.

Continuing in the spirit of being topical yet historical, we thought today might be a good day to resurrect the proto-Taylor Project song “Build a Wall”. This song was written and recorded under the guise of an earlier band, “Because We Can”. Visit the BandCamp page (https://taylorproject.bandcamp.com/track/build-a-wall-2005-live-reprise) to listen to a version of “Build a Wall” recorded live and crappy (somewhere in a bar where, based on the chatter, people still smoked inside!) in 2005 or so.

“Build a Wall” is about a US election, in this case the 2004 one won by George W Bush. It’s also about the appeal of building walls between those with fundamentally different values. Both themes are apparently of renewed interest in the context of November 2016. Curiously, the lyrics might now be read as being from someone else’s point of view:

I’ve waited, I’ve voted for so long now
And now it, it seems that it’s too late now
And now I, I’ve been left behind
We could always build a wall
Kind of like the one we had before
Through the middle of the free world.
Or you could all fuck off to Mars
With the money that you save on welfare
And I will gladly be left behind
And you can be as right as you want
And I will gladly be left behind
You’ll have your side, and I’ll have mine.
I’ve waited, I’ve waited for too long
And now I, I know that it’s too late now
And now I, I won’t even try anymore
I vote let’s build a wall
Through the middle of the free world
You’ll have your side and I’ll have mine
And you can have the better one
I’ll take the sins and you can have the guns
Bring back the cold war
And you can be as right as you want
And I will gladly be left behind
You’ll have your side and I’ll have mine
You’ll have your world and I’ll have mine.
